Village Economics 101 -- Fact Sheets on Croton Economics

Brief, one-page background fact sheets based on current data and trends in the Village of Croton-on-Hudson, New York. The data comes chiefly from the Village's own Budget Books of the past decade (1998-2008). Other sources consulted are listed as well.   • Village Demographic Trends -- At present Croton has a higher percentage of adults aged 35-54 than the county overall.

  • Our Village Government -- Croton-on-Hudson has a council-manager form of government, in which the Chief Administrative Officer is the Village Manager.
  • Village Services: A Full Suite -- The village provides a fuller slate of services than is offered even in nearby larger towns.

  • Village Expenses -- Nine-tenths of the village's annual expenses are operating costs associated with providing services and employing staff.

  • Village Revenues -- Two thirds of village revenue comes from levying a tax on property.

  • Property Taxes -- Village tax rates have climbed three times faster than inflation since 2004-05.

  • Property Valuation -- Property valuation in Croton is now at an 8-year low.

  • Closed v. Open Government -- Closed-door sessions of the village board are five times more common in 2007 than in 2004.
